Another week has gone, and still too many to go, but what makes it easy is the positive progress I’m doing so far, I hope others in the diet contest are doing well, and staying motivated even if they are not losing weight too quickly.

Compared to Week 1 I’m a little behind schedule, I have lost 1KG only this week, and it was much more difficult than the last week, the first two days of the week were fine, followed by my every week prize meal and then the bad days started, but what cheers me up is the little progress I have done even if it is a little less than planned.

Current weight: 99KG =~ 217.8 pounds
Lost this week: 1KG =~ 2.2 pounds (3.7% of the target)
Lost so far: 3KG =~ 6.6 pounds (11.11% of the target)
Still to go: 24KG =~ 52.8 pounds

Still I’m not doing any exercise, and my reasons are simple, with the over weight of 24KG I have right now, exercising will be like hell to me, no matter how basic exercise it is, specially that I’m a smoker, so I decided to wait till I lose some more weight first, and then start exercising to get in shape instead of doing it just to lose weight, sort of making it a habit (I wish…).

I have seen few blog posts with tips and diet advices that I would like to share with you, Rami Kayyali’s How I lost 40 Kg - Tips for Losing Weight and Chris Pirillo’s 50 Weight Loss Tips, they are motivating and somehow helpful but of coarse the magic comes from ourselves and our will to do it and these tips are just supporters, without our believe that we can/need to lose weight, all these diet tips or magic recipes will do nothing but letting us feel like losers instead of losing weight.

One week has passed since I’ve started the diet mission, and almost two weeks since I’ve started my dieting in general, my results are going very well so far, and I’m very pleased and motivated, I have lost 5 KGs in the last 15 days, two of them since I’ve joined the contest.

This post is my first week report so I’ll include my numbers to document my progress. As I have mentioned, last week I’ve lost 2 Kilograms, and I’m really satisfied about that, if I can continue this way things will be much better than my expectations:

Current weight: 100KG =~ 220 pounds
Lost: 2KG =~ 4.8 pounds (7.4% of the target)
Still to go: 25KG =~ 55 pounds

I still have a long way to go, but I have enough confidence and motive to do it. Reading Mike’s Weighing in for week 1 reminded me of setting a target date, so I’ve decided to set it to October 1st, 15 weeks from now, with a target loss of 1.6 KG =~ 3.52 pounds every week, not so easy to do, but really worth doing, I’ll be posting updates here on weekly basis, so keep track if you are interested.

Diet Math

Now let me brief you how I’ve spent the last week and how I could accomplish this so far, I have just did the required math:

I used to eat what worth over 4000 Kcal before the diet.

A normal human being needs approximately 2200 Kcal.

To maintain the weight I have right now I should eat what worth 2200 Kcal only.

So obviously if I want to lose weight I have to eat less, and so I did, I’m having now a daily fuel that worth 600-700 Kcal only, I faced a horrible few days at the beginning, but now things are much better.

I’m trying to eat all what my body needs with these few calories I’m getting everyday, tuna fish, some noodles and a lot of salads, now my stomach got smaller and I’m feeling stuffed very early (naturally this depends on the meal I’m having), I’m trying to avoid seeing any chocolate or ice cream though..

Plus and Minus

I award myself every weekend with a meal that I love and enjoy, and most importantly eat without thinking about any diet or calories, now as my needs got lesser, even if I wanted to eat more I won’t be able to, and will feel stuffed sooner.

Finally I have to admit the thing I’m doing wrong, or let’s say the thing I’m not doing, and unfortunately not willing to do it right now, EXERCISE. I’m not doing any kind of exercise that worth mentioning, I can say that I’m walking more nowadays, but this is not what’s called exercise. As I’m not willing to do any exercise at the moment I’m trying not to eat the amount that I would burn by exercising, at least until I change my mind and move my sleeping muscles.

I hope everybody else in the contest are doing well with their diet, together we can achieve our goals with the great motive we are exchanging between each other.

If you follow the 9rules blog you may have heard about The Diet Contest that Colin D. Devroe has started, it’s a wonderful idea to be part of an online group that decided to have healthier bodies and be in shape again, specially that we as computer professionals in general get more extra weight by sitting behind the computer all day long without any exercise.

I think I’m the most over-weighted among others in the group and the one who have to lose more as well, I have over 30KG (66 pounds) extra weight that I had put in the last three years (almost 10KG a year) and now I have to loose them and get back in shape, I’m sure this won’t happen in a week or even a month, it requires months to get over it, but I also believe that I can do it.

It’s not a matter of dieting only, the concept is in the life change that what I should follow, I love food, ice cream, chocolate and all these stuff, but at the end I’m not burning what I’m getting. After school and college days I’m not walking or exercising any more, but I’m still eating the same amount I used to eat then and maybe more, so the first part of my plan is to change my life, understand the concept that I have to burn exactly as much as I get.

After I finished reading John Walker’s The Hacker’s Diet online book a week ago I started my dieting mission, the concept of dieting as a hacker really convinced me:

“This is precisely what losing weight involves. If you’re successful in the things that matter to you but overweight, all you need to lose that weight is to make accomplishing your weight and health goals matter just as much, then approach weight loss and control just like any other important project: by developing and carrying out a rational plan for success based on an understanding of what’s involved in achieving it.” The Hacker’s Diet - Introduction.

As a developer who work to solve problems, and do algorithms for everything in life, it should be easy to have such a will and believe that I can control my weight too, I think it’s just that I didn’t pay enough attention to this side before and now is the time.

Colin and others has posted their photos in The Diet Pool on Flickr, I don’t think I have enough courage to do this, but at least I can give my information to start logging my diet online, having this feeling that my weight is available for the public will motivate me more to change and lose weight faster, and become a natural person.

Current weight: 102KG =~ 224.8 pounds
Target weight: 75KG =~ 165 pounds
Height: 175cm =~ 5 feet 9 inches
Current BMI: 33.3
Target BMI: 24.5

If you think you are overweighed and you’d like to join us, signup by commenting to Colin’s Diet Post and he will take care of the rest, we started yesterday May 30th, and I’m not sure if the signup is still open though. Good luck for you, and wish me the same…
